How to change roles in a team on Panka

In short

A member’s role in the team is changed by an administrator: in Settings open “Members”, tap the person and choose, for example, “Set as Coach”. You can’t change your own role yourself.

If, on the other hand, you want to change your card’s position on the pitch, from Goalkeeper to Forward for example, ask the coach or an administrator: they change it from Settings → “Players”. As a player, you can’t do it yourself.

Two different roles

On Panka, “role” can mean two things:

  • the role in the team — “Player”, “Coach” or “Administrator” — decides what you can do in the app; it is assigned with the invite code and changed in “Members”;
  • the role on the pitch, or position — “Goalkeeper”, “Defender”, “Midfielder” or “Forward” — is on the player’s card and decides which department they go in when you field them.

What each role can do

There are three roles in a team, and each one only sees the Settings rows it needs:

  • “Player”: fields a fantasy lineup and appears in the “STANDINGS”. In Settings they can view “Scoring parameters” (read-only), “Seasons” and “Rules”, but don’t manage anything about the team.
  • “Coach”: manages matches, call-ups, the coach’s lineup and ratings; adds and edits cards in “Players”, including position and cost; approves “Association requests”, opens “Polls” and sends “Notifications”; looks after medical certificates, dues, trainings and tournaments. Doesn’t play the fantasy game, because the coach is the one who gives the ratings: doesn’t field a lineup and doesn’t appear in the “STANDINGS”.
  • “Administrator”: does everything the coach does and, on top of that, fields a fantasy lineup and appears in the “STANDINGS”. Only administrators manage “Members” and “Invites”, change “General settings”, “Scoring parameters” and the “Team” details, open and close seasons and manage the season roster.

Medical certificates and dues only work if the team has turned them on; trainings and tournaments aren’t there in teams set up as “Games with friends”.

Changing a member’s role

An administrator does it:

  1. in Settings open “Members”: people are grouped into “Administrators”, “Coaches” and “Players”;
  2. tap the person, or the pencil on their row;
  3. choose “Set as Player”, “Set as Coach” or “Set as Administrator”. “Role updated” appears.
  • Your own row, marked “(you)”, doesn’t open: only another administrator can change your role.
  • Anyone who becomes coach no longer fields a fantasy lineup and drops out of the “STANDINGS”. The fantasy lineups they had saved are kept: if they go back to being a player or administrator, they reappear with their points.
  • A coach who also wants to play the fantasy game has to be made an administrator: they do everything the coach does and, on top of that, field a lineup and appear in the standings.

Suspending or removing a member

Also from “Members”, by tapping the person, an administrator finds:

  • “Suspend member”: they can no longer access the team and disappear from the members list. It can’t be undone from the app, and a suspended member can’t rejoin even with a new invite code;
  • “Remove from team”: they leave the team and, if need be, can rejoin with a new invite code.

In both cases they drop out of the “STANDINGS”, while their card stays on the roster with its ratings and history. If you think they might come back, remove them instead of suspending them.

Leaving a team or handing over the administrator role

  • There is no button in the app to leave a team: ask an administrator to remove you from “Members”.
  • A team can have several administrators. To hand over, make another member an administrator with “Set as Administrator”; if you then want to go back to being a player, they will be the one to change your role.
  • An administrator can’t remove themselves from the team or change their own role. If you are the only one, appoint someone else first: otherwise nobody could manage members and invites from the app any more. This also applies before you delete your account.

Changing a player’s position on the pitch

A card’s position on the pitch is changed by the coach or an administrator:

  1. in Settings open “Players”: the cards are grouped into “GOALKEEPERS”, “DEFENDERS”, “MIDFIELDERS” and “FORWARDS”;
  2. tap the card: “Edit player” opens;
  3. in “Position” choose the right one and tap “Save”.
  • As a player you can’t change it yourself. In your “Profile”, under “PLAYER PROFILE”, you can edit your card’s nickname, first name, last name, date of birth, description and photo, but not the position or the cost.
  • The only time you choose the position yourself is when you join with an invite and create your card, in “Your player card”. If nobody changes it, a new card starts as Goalkeeper.
  • The new position counts for fantasy lineups fielded from then on: those already saved keep the position the player had when they were fielded.
  • A card that is off the roster for the season can’t be edited: an administrator puts it back on the roster from Settings → “Seasons” → “Manage roster”.

Frequently asked questions

I’m a player: how do I change my role?

It depends on what you mean. Your card’s position on the pitch, for example from Goalkeeper to Defender, is changed by the coach or an administrator in Settings → “Players”. To become coach or administrator you need an administrator, from “Members”.

Why does my card say Goalkeeper?

Because that is the position a new card starts with, if whoever creates it doesn’t change it. Ask the coach or an administrator to correct it.

Can I be the coach and play the fantasy game?

Not with the coach role, which gives the ratings and doesn’t appear in the standings. An administrator can make you an administrator: you do everything the coach does and, on top of that, you field your own fantasy lineup.

How do I leave a team?

You can’t do it on your own: ask an administrator to remove you in Settings → “Members”, with “Remove from team”. If you are the administrator, appoint someone else first: an administrator can’t remove themselves.

I’m an administrator: can I change my own role?

No, your row in “Members” doesn’t open. Make another member an administrator, and they will be the one to change your role.

Can a suspended member come back?

Not from the app: they disappear from “Members” and can’t rejoin even with a new code. For someone who might come back, use “Remove from team”, which leaves them the option of rejoining with an invite.
